Niagara Rim Trail, Oct. 2008

 

 To get to the Niagara Rim OHV campground area from east 108 you're going to want to turn off at the Eagle Meadow exit on the south side of the highway. This is approximately 13 miles past Strawberry, just past mile marker 44, and in the Mud, Sweat and Gears adopt-a-highway section. After you turn off highway 108 there is an intersection about 1/4 mile up, this is 5N01. Turn right onto 5N01 and follow that for a couple of miles, it will lead you to a short bridge. Immediately after the bridge make a left into the Niagara OHV campground area.

 

 Keep in mind that the roads and the trail is subjected to seasonal and/or conditional closures. Also you're going to need a fire permit if you expect to have a campfire or use a propane stove.

 The OHV campground consists of 10 campsites and does have restroom facilities, plenty of flat space to pitch tents, picnic tables and fire pit. One side has quite a bit of tree cover while the other does not, if it's going to be cold you may want to keep on the side with less tree cover so the sun can use whatever sunlight is available to stay warm.

 

 This trail is essentially a forest road with some OHV areas that you can go play on. If you have a stock Jeep you should do fine so long as you take it easy.

 Continue to follow 5N01 up and that will lead you into the trail, we started at No Way Out Hill. This is probably the most difficult portion of the entire trail so make sure you make it up.

 Once you make it up No Way Out Hill you are rewarded with a beautiful view. Unfortunately ours was marred by a forest fire. We were able to get it reported and found that the forest service already knew about one fire in the area. Probably took on some new life so they were going to have another look into it. 

 

 All things that go up must come down! After you check out the wonderful view, crazy rock formations, and maybe have a sandwich, it's time to head on down Hard Brake Hill. This is a pretty steep decline, there is one place where you have to be a little careful coming down between a couple of rocks, it's pretty easy to get through and after that it's all about low gearing and/or standing on your brakes.

 Lots of fun to play around at Lions Butt, there are some nice areas to flex out your suspension and take some pictures. There are some pretty nice sized crevices so make sure you don't accidentally drive into one. 

 

 There is a lot more to the trail, including a rock pile, a vista point, sidewall suicide, etc. Even though the main roads are pretty easy there is plenty of opportunity go find some challenging stuff and have a ball. 

 

 It should also be noted that there is a horse ranch in the area and it's fairly popular with hunters.
